How many

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ§  HOW MANY NEURODIVERGENT PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Spoiler alert: We don’t really know. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
And that’s actually the interesting part.
South Africa doesn’t have a magical national database containing every autistic person, every person with ADHD, every dyslexic brain and everyone sitting at home wondering:
β€œWHY THE HELL AM I LIKE THIS?” πŸ˜‚πŸ§
There is no official South African percentage for β€œneurodivergent people.”
Why?
Because neurodivergent isn’t a medical diagnosis. It’s a broad term covering people whose brains function, develop, learn, perceive or process information differently from what is considered typical.
And people can’t exactly be counted if nobody has identified them. πŸ‘€
πŸ”’ LET’S PLAY WITH THE NUMBERS
For an easy example, let’s use a population of:
πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ 60 MILLION PEOPLE
A commonly used broad international estimate puts neurodivergence somewhere around 15–20% of the population.
⚠️ Important: That is NOT an official South African statistic.
But if we use it as a rough model:
🧠 15% = 9 million people
🧠 20% = 12 million people
That’s potentially:
🀯 9–12 MILLION PEOPLE
And suddenly β€œneurodivergent” doesn’t sound like some tiny group of unusual people hiding under the sofa.
It’s potentially a massive chunk of the population. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ§
πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ BUT HERE’S THE PROBLEM…
There’s a rather enormous elephant wearing an ADHD T-shirt in the room. πŸ˜πŸ‘•πŸ˜‚
DIAGNOSED β‰  ACTUALLY PRESENT
Imagine two groups:
🟒 People who have been identified and diagnosed
πŸ”΅ People who may be neurodivergent but have never been identified
Those are NOT necessarily the same number.
Someone has to:
πŸ‘€ notice the signs
🧠 understand what they’re seeing
πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ have access to someone qualified to assess them
πŸ’° potentially afford the assessment
πŸ“ be able to get to the appropriate services
πŸ“š know that neurodivergence even exists
And if any of those steps fail…
πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Congratulations! You’re officially β€œjust difficult.”
πŸ˜‚
🧩 THE UNDIAGNOSED GENERATION
Imagine someone growing up with ADHD.
Nobody knows about ADHD.
So instead of:
🧠 β€œThis person’s brain has a different attention-regulation system.”
They hear:
❌ Lazy
❌ Doesn’t listen
❌ Doesn’t apply themselves
❌ Careless
❌ Disruptive
❌ Doesn’t reach their potential
❌ Needs to try harder
Now imagine being autistic without anyone recognising it.
Instead of:
🧠 β€œThis person processes sensory information and social communication differently.”
They may hear:
❌ Weird
❌ Rude
❌ Antisocial
❌ Too sensitive
❌ Difficult
❌ Doesn’t make eye contact
❌ Why can’t you just be normal?
And then everyone wonders why the person grows up exhausted. 🫠
🎭 MASKING ENTERS THE CHAT
Some neurodivergent people become extremely good at appearing neurotypical.
They learn:
πŸ‘€ when to make eye contact
πŸ˜‚ when to laugh
🀐 when NOT to interrupt
πŸͺ‘ how to sit still
πŸ—£οΈ how to have the β€œcorrect” conversation
😐 how to hide sensory overload
πŸ™‚ how to say β€œI’m fine” while their nervous system is filing a formal complaint
From the outside:
β€œWow, they seem completely normal!”
Inside:
πŸ”₯🧠πŸ”₯ SYSTEM OVERLOAD πŸ”₯🧠πŸ”₯
And because the person appears to be coping…
Nobody investigates.
🧠 THE GREAT SOUTH AFRICAN β€œBUT YOU SEEM FINE” THEORY
This deserves its own scientific journal.
β€œBut you don’t look autistic.”
β€œYou can’t have ADHD; you did well at school.”
β€œYou’re too intelligent to have a learning disorder.”
β€œEveryone gets overwhelmed.”
β€œEveryone hates noisy places.”
β€œEveryone procrastinates.”
Yes.
Everyone occasionally does some of these things.
But frequency, intensity, pattern and impact matter.
A person can also develop incredibly sophisticated coping mechanisms.
Which means:
The better you become at hiding the problem…
…the less likely anyone is to notice the problem.
🀯
πŸ“Š ADHD GIVES US A LITTLE CLUE
South African clinical guidance has estimated ADHD prevalence at roughly 3–5%, while adult estimates are around 2.5–4.3%.
But actual diagnosed/recorded numbers can be considerably lower.
Why?
Because diagnosis requires identification.
And identification requires:
🧠 awareness
πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ assessment
πŸ’° access
πŸ“š knowledge
πŸ₯ healthcare resources
So a low diagnosis rate does NOT automatically mean a low prevalence rate.
It can also mean:
β€œWe haven’t found everyone yet.”
πŸ”ŽπŸ§
🧩 AUTISM HAS THE SAME PROBLEM
Autism prevalence estimates in South Africa vary considerably because the available studies are limited and don’t give us one reliable national number.
And diagnosis can take time.
Some people aren’t identified until:
πŸ‘Ά childhood
πŸŽ’ school
πŸŽ“ university
πŸ’Ό employment
❀️ relationships
πŸ”₯ burnout
πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« or sometimes… their 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond.
Imagine discovering at 42 that the instruction manual for your brain was apparently sitting behind the cupboard the entire time.
πŸ˜‚πŸ“–πŸ§
πŸ‘» THE INVISIBLE MILLIONS?
This is where we need to be careful.
We cannot honestly say:
β€œSouth Africa has exactly 10 million undiagnosed neurodivergent people.”
We don’t have the data to prove that.
But we can say:
πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ South Africa doesn’t have a reliable national count of everyone who is neurodivergent.
🧠 Many neurodevelopmental conditions are under-recognised and underdiagnosed.
πŸ₯ Access to assessment and specialist services is limited.
🎭 Some people mask their traits extremely effectively.
πŸ“Š Therefore, diagnosed numbers are unlikely to represent everyone who could meet criteria for a particular condition.
And THAT is where the mystery begins. πŸ”Ž
πŸ€” SO… HOW MANY?
If we use 15–20% purely as a broad working estimate, we’d get approximately:
🟣 9–12 MILLION PEOPLE
out of a 60-million population.
But think of that number as:
πŸ“ A ROUGH MODEL β€” NOT A CENSUS.
The actual number could be lower.
It could potentially be higher depending on what we include under the enormous umbrella of β€œneurodivergent.”
Because there is another problem…
🧠 WHAT EXACTLY COUNTS?
Autism?
ADHD?
Dyslexia?
Dyspraxia?
Tourette syndrome?
Intellectual disability?
Other neurological or developmental differences?
Acquired brain conditions?
And should psychiatric conditions be included?
There is no universally agreed answer.
Which means two people can talk about β€œneurodivergence” while actually counting completely different populations.
πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ“Š
πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ AND THAT’S WHY SA-BUZZ EXISTS
Maybe the most interesting question isn’t:
β€œHow many neurodivergent people are there?”
Maybe it’s:
β€œHow many people have spent their entire lives wondering why everyone else seems to have received instructions that they never got?” πŸ˜‚πŸ§ πŸ“–
The person who was called lazy.
The child who was called difficult.
The teenager who was called antisocial.
The employee who was called careless.
The adult who learned to mask everything.
The person who thought:
β€œThere’s something wrong with me.”
Maybe there isn’t.
Maybe their brain simply runs a different operating system. 🧠⚑
And maybe they haven’t been diagnosed because…
Nobody ever thought to look.
πŸ”ŽπŸ§©πŸ’œ
πŸ§ πŸ’œ NEURODIVERGENT DOESN’T MEAN BROKEN
Different β‰  damaged.
Different β‰  stupid.
Different β‰  lazy.
Different β‰  difficult.
Different β‰  less capable.
It means different neurological wiring or functioning β€” and sometimes that difference comes with genuine challenges.
But it can also come with some fascinating strengths. ⚑
Pattern recognition πŸ”
Hyperfocus 🎯
Creative thinking 🎨
Unusual problem solving 🧩
Deep interests πŸ”₯
Attention to detail πŸ‘€
Different ways of processing information 🧠
The trick isn’t pretending everyone has the same brain.
It’s figuring out what the brain actually needs to function properly.
πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ§  THE BIG QUESTION
South Africa knows how many people have been diagnosed with certain conditions.
We don’t yet know exactly how many people are neurodivergent.
And somewhere between those two numbers…
…there may be millions of people who have spent years being misunderstood.
So perhaps the next question isn’t:
β€œWhy are there so many neurodivergent people?”
Maybe it’s:
πŸ”Ž β€œHOW MANY HAVE WE SIMPLY NEVER IDENTIFIED?”
Now THAT is an interesting question. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ§ πŸ’œ
⚠️ SA-BUZZ NOTE
The percentages used on this page are illustrative estimates, not official South African prevalence figures. Neurodivergence is not itself a psychiatric diagnosis, and there is currently no single universally accepted definition or list of conditions included under the term.
We’d rather say β€œwe don’t know” than make up a nice-looking number. πŸ˜ŽπŸ“Š
Because apparently even statistics need fact-checking. πŸ˜‚
